When was gay marriage legalized in California?
Gay marriage was briefly legalized in California in May 15, 2008 after the California Supreme Court ruled that a ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.
However, this was short-lived as Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that aimed to amend the California Constitution to define marriage as only between a man and a woman, was passed by voters later that year.
The ban on same-sex marriage was subsequently challenged in court, and in 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional, effectively legalizing gay marriage in California once again.
